Artist of the Month for September 2020
Enjoying and making art has been a part of my life since childhood. I still remember the best ever Christmas present of a John Gnagy artist kit. The kit included oil, watercolor and pastel art supplies and a detailed instruction book all encased in a spiffy faux leather attaché case! Doodles became art projects as I worked through each of those lessons. But then college, a 20-year Coast Guard career and another 20 years in the information technology field became my primary focus. Though I dabbled in art throughout my professional career, artistic endeavors were placed on the back burner. Throughout my career and travels, with camera to my eye, I attempted to capture the beauty of the natural world hoping someday to paint some of those scenes. Since recently entering retirement I have been able to revisit and redirect my creative energies toward an art driven life. I’ve been fortunate to study with many great artists through workshops by Bob Rankin, Dan Nelson, Sterling Edwards, Helen Beacham and Erik Johnson…just to name a few. I’ve enjoyed working in watercolor, acrylics, and oil…often combining those media and techniques. Living in the Charleston Low Country provides a wealth of inspiration for landscapes and maritime pieces, and are often a jumping off point for abstract works. As my artist journey evolves I hope to be open to all possibilities and stay true to my personal motto: “Maintain rigid flexibility at all times”.
